The story of Beauer caravans: how a “nesting” idea became an expandable icon
Published: 04/03/2026 // Category:
If you’ve ever stood on a pitch thinking, “Love the idea of a compact caravan… but I’d also like an actual living space,” then you already understand the itch Beauer set out to scratch.
Beauer’s whole thing is simple to say and surprisingly hard to engineer: tow small, live big. The brand’s signature trick is a caravan body built from telescopic sliding modules that “nest” together on the road, then expand when you arrive. That patented concept is the thread running through the company’s history.
2010: the retro spark that started it all
The origin story begins with Eric Beau admiring the small, characterful caravans of the 1960s (the kind with charm baked into the curves). In 2010, he decided to design a compact caravan with a sixties look, working alongside his father.
His brief was refreshingly blunt: small, easy to install, quick to manufacture, and modern. To get there, Eric came up with the idea of a caravan made from interlocking telescopic sliding modules, and he registered a patent for the mechanism.
In other words: keep the tow footprint sensible, then cheat physics (politely) once you’re parked up.

2012: the 3X is born (and friends want one)
By 2012, the idea had turned into a clear purpose: tow something compact that doesn’t hog the road or the storage space, then open it up into a genuinely usable interior. Beauer describes it as a comfortable 12 m² space, created by three modules that fit into one. That’s where the 3X name comes from, and it became the brand’s flagship concept.
The first prototype was built in the family garden and, as these stories often go, it quickly stopped being “just a project.” Friends and neighbours started asking if they could buy one, which helped kick off the Beauer adventure and the company was created in 2012.
2020: the concept expands beyond caravans
By 2020, Beauer had started applying the same patented expanding-module idea to a wider range of uses.
Alongside the core caravan concept, the company developed:
• a larger 28 m² model (the 3X+)
• and the “cell-car,” a removable cell mounted to a chassis cab
As demand from professional clients grew, Beauer adapted these expandable units for all sorts of mobile work and service setups: mobile offices, training rooms, fablabs, hair salons, recruitment areas, and more.

2022: scaling up to meet increasing demand
With demand increasing, 2022 was about capacity. Beauer relocated to a new 2000 square metre production facility (still in Cholet) and hired 10 full time staff to operate the production line.
By this point, Beauer had gained recognition and traction in a number of key EU markets, as well as further afield - the previous production facility, realistically only equipped to meet domestic demand in France, had served it's purpose and it was time to make a change.
Beauer aim to become a major manufacturer in the leisure vehicle industry, and a modern, larger capacity production facility with scope for further expansion will enable that.

2025: a new chapter and a new team
In 2025, Beauer marked a major change: Eric and Patricia Beau handed over the company to a team of four buyers who were convinced by the uniqueness of the products and the team behind them.
The new owners’ stated direction is to develop the offer, improve what already exists, and give it a new industrial dimension. Eric & Patricia are still very much involved in an advisory capacity, to ensure that the product & company remain true to the ideas and values that made it such a success in the first place.
There are big plans in the works to take Beauer to the international stage; with dealers across Europe and now, the UK too! Watch this space for further updates.
